First Community A.M.E. Housing, Inc.
First Community A.M.E. Housing, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to provide safe and adequate housing for the low income senior citizens of Grand Rapids, Michigan. This organization recognize the need for affordable housing which allows individuals to be selfsufficient. This organization is a part of the vision of outreach framed by First Community A.M.E. Church, 500 James SE. This vision was first expressed by Rev. Lyman S. Parks, former Mayor of Grand Rapids. Put on the drawing board, organized and building began in 1989 under the leadership of Rev. Jesse W. Cotton. The building was completed and occupied by the first residents in April 1990 under the supervision of Rev. Robert James Eckert. Today this building is occupied by satisfied seniors who take pride in Allen Manor as their home. The building is operational under the sponsorship of Rev. David R. Jarrett, Sr.
First Community's Board of Directors
The Board of Directors of First Community A.M.E. Housing, Inc. is comprised of community citizens and members of First Community A.M.E. Church, who recognize the importance of making it possible for our senior community to be able to afford and remain in the areas of the city familiar -to them. The board continues to assess the needs of its residents and has committed to maintaining our building.
About Allen Manor Senior Apartment Housing
First Community A.M.E. Church, located at 500 James SE, is the sponsor for this property. It is a 24 unit apartment community for the senior adult age 62 and older. Each apartment has (1) roomy bedroom, living room area, bath, and kitchen. Our building is a tow-story with a large community room and laundromat.
This is a H.U.D. Section 8 project and qualified applicants pay 30% of adjusted gross income as rent. Allen Manor is managed by Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, who provides a wide range of services in the State of Michigan.
