First Community A.M.E. Housing, Inc.
First Community A.M.E. Housing, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide safe and adequate housing for low-income senior citizens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This organization recognizes the need for affordable housing that allows individuals to be self-sufficient, and to remain in the community where many of them live. This organization is a part of a vision of outreach conceived by the congregation of First Community A.M.E. Church, 500 James SE. The vision was first expressed by Rev. Lyman S. Parks, former Mayor of Grand Rapids.
The construction of Allen Manor began in 1989 under the leadership of Rev. Jesse W. Cotton, and the building was completed under the supervision of Rev. Robert Eckert. The first residents of Allen Manor occupied the building in April 1990. Today, it is home to many satisfied seniors who take pride in calling Allen Manor their home. The building is currently operated under the sponsorship of Rev. Dr. Willie A. Gholston II.
First Community's Board of Directors
The Board of Directors of First Community A.M.E. Housing, Inc. is comprised of community citizens and members of First Community A.M.E. Church. The Board of Directors recognizes the importance of making the facility affordable for its residents and allows our seniors to live in an area of the city that is familiar and convenient. The board continues to assess the needs of our residents and is committed to maintaining our building as we provide the support and service to our residents that allow them to live out their golden years in harmony and peace.
About Allen Manor Senior Apartment Housing
First Community A.M.E. Church, located at 500 James SE, is the sponsor for this property. Allen Manor is a 24-unit apartment community for senior adults, age 62 and older. Each apartment has one roomy bedroom, a living room area, a bath, and a kitchen. Our two-story building has a large community room and a laundromat.
Allen Manor is a H.U.D. Section 8 project and qualified applicants pay 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent. Allen Manor is managed by Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, which provides a wide range of services in Michigan.
